Around 200 Argentinian naval officers are taking part in a parade the town of Foxford in Co Mayo this morning to honour the First Admiral of the South American country's navy.
William Brown hailed from Foxford and was born there in 1777. His seafaring career took him to South America, where he led the fledgling Argentine Navy into battle with both Brazil and Spain.
The Argentine officers are in Ireland for a four-day visit.
The Navy’s tall ship, the Libertad, docked in Dublin on Friday and will be visited by children from Foxford on Tuesday.
The visit marks a long standing link between the two countries.
Today’s event in Foxford is being attended by the Argentine Ambassador to Ireland, Laura Bernal.
Naval personnel from the LÉ Samuel Beckett are also taking part.
The commemoration is being led by the Foxford Brass and Reed Band, accompanied by members of the ARA Libertad band.
The parade is marching to a bust of Admiral Brown in the town, before participants attend a memorial mass.
After the service, the parade will resume along the promenade named after the town’s famous son.
The event will conclude early this afternoon with a wreath laying ceremony.
