I know. In a time of almost 100% employment, there will be queues at the barrack gate...

500,000 now in receipt of social welfare payments as a result of the current crisis.

5 retired members contacted an old battery / squadron / company sized unit of mine this week to enquire about coming back or if there was anything they could do that would take pressure off the unit, as soldiers, contractors, volunteers.

The fact you can come back and leave for nothing when ever you want will be attractive. The remunerations might not.

Quite what a spare RSM or BQMS will do is open to questions. A junior rank technician on the other hand is a different story

And if it allows 3 people to come back when the grass was greener on the other side or for whom their life situation has changed .... it’s worth it

Beware.... if they mandatory call us up under ATCP its not an option with a choice. its a "be on parade tomorrow and the next day untii released", job or family notwithstanding.

    So far
Infantry Corps - An Lámh Comhrac

"Let us be clear about three facts:First of all.All battles and all wars are won in the end by the Infantryman.Secondly the Infantryman bears the brunt of the fighting, his casualties are heavier and he suffers greater extremes of fatigue and discomfort than the other arms.Thirdly, the art of the Infantryman is less stereotyped and harder to acquire than that of any other arm".

Looks like he is just expressing his appreciation for their work. Fact is some of the more useful reservists are already engaged in their civvy job, which also happens to be an essential occupation. RDFRA on twitter have been hilighting these all week. This is where people are needed more at present.

Not forgetting logs support will be required and if reservists were covering some duties that will free up PDF with skills that are harder to come by

Also not forgetting that there is more than likely DF personnel who are confirmed cases/close contacts/self isolating etc ... just like the rest of the population

I'm not aware of anything that sets out any punishment or measures that can be taken if someone fails to parade in such circumstances?
Not as far as I can tell that is directly codified in R5.

However if such happened, by definition you are subject to military law, as you stand called out and subject to the same ranges of punishment as any PDF man for not turning up/on parade when ordered ; there's any range of things you could do.

(R1 and R2 get around this neatly, but R5 has nothing like it )

Section 243 of the Act refers:

“When a reservist is called out for training or on permanent service or in aid to the civil power.... without leave granted or such sickness or other reasonable excuse.... fails to appear .... (a) if he is called out on permanent service or in aid to the civil power such reservist shall be guilty, according to the circumstances, of desertion action or absence without leave...”

    Leaving them liable to either
Section 243(2)(a) court-martial and according punishment, or
Section 243(2)(b) summary trial by District Court and fine of up to €2,000
