  • Sailors on USS Theodore Roosevelt bidding farewell to Capt Crozier

    Needs sound ... fair play
"Are they trying to shoot down the other drone? "

"No, they're trying to fly the tank"

Leadership is about doing the right thing no matter what the consequences. To use the naval term I hate, Bravo Zulu Captain Crozier.

If he had committed war crimes Trump would reinstate him.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Nobody likes getting a "belt of a Crozier " least any part of the Trump Cabinet. He must have attempted or known that the normal report/request route was stagnating and he needed immediate action for his Crew. He sent his message, and info'd it to many, costing him his immediate future for now.
That part of the USN operates in an uncomfortable professional status, as often CVN's have former flyers as Captains. They would not be as Salt Water and Old School as Seaman officers who came up through the Fleet system and would be used to instant reactions and decisions.

We have not seen the last of this man. The dems have chosen him as their anti-trump hero, and a considerable portion of neutral and right wing commentators think this is a step.too far for the Trump presidency. The military are apolitical. A president should support them no matter what.

Opinion: Removing the USS Theodore Roosevelt captain was reckless and foolish
John Kirby writes that when Thomas Modly, acting secretary of the Navy, removed Capt. Brett Crozier of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, it was unwarranted, reckless in its timing and petty in appearances. And Modly’s decision could have a chilling effect on other commanding officers in similar circumstances.
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
            Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

AFAIK Captains of CVN's all come from a Flight Ops background, either Pilots or NFO's they do a "Ship Driving Course" after they have completed a successful tour as a CAG.

Its a US law that carrier captains have to be aviators. In addition to the ship driving course they have to do Nuclear power school as well AND do a tour as XO of a nuclear ship which means they nearly have to map their career out miles in front, and if you want to have enough time left to screen for flag rank it means you have to punch the tickets needed very early in the career

Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly himself showed "extremely poor judgement" in himself not following the chain of command in recalling Crozier. Legally he can do it - but there are a whole number of steps and flag officers between him and the SecNav if removal or otherwise was necessary (Modly should as a general principle only be reaching down to interfere at the 3 and 4 star level as they are the senate/politically approved slots and not to a non flag position). There is the immediate COMCARSTRKGRU NINE commander (a 1 Star); then the Director, Maritime Operations US Pacific Fleet (2 Star), the Commander 3rd Fleet which the USS Big Ted is part of (3 Star), his superior Commander US Pacific Fleet (4 Star), then the U.S. Indo-Pacific Theatre Commander ( always a Navy 4 Star) and finally the CNO (4 Star) and of course the Chair of the JCS as the ultimate uniformed boss between Capt Crozier and Modly. This was an operational problem on a USN vessel best left to his operational superiors to solve if a disciplinary issue to adjudicate and not a political problem and it was Modly who made it political. I can see Flag officers closing ranks on this NavSec for over stepping the blue line that demarcates operational responsibility and his personal political ambitions in trying to impress the President how tough he is to get confirmed as NavSec full time. Thousands of crew cheering off Crozier send a powerful message - something that Modly will never experience when he one day and fairly soon leaves the Pentagon!

Lehman fired Rickover (who was a right bastard , but nevertheless a hero too, nuclear carriers would not exist without him ) and got away with it.

Trump will claim that only one thousand of the four thousand crew members cheered the Captain off of the ship thus claiming that the decision to remove the Captain from his position was favoured by a large majority of the crew .

Whatever happens, this guy's career is essentially over as he will be considered a toxic, loose cannon and will end up as OC Blankets, Grey,if he is lucky. The speed with which the bosses chopped him is indicative of how risky it is to make a mistake as a ship's captain these days. The phrase, "loss of confidence" is a death sentence.

Only one boss chopped him. The rest in the line had little say in the matter.
Indeed the one who chopped him is only in the job as he replaced the man who wouldn't reinstate the Navy seal who got away with committing war crimes.

I suppose the Captain can take a sabbatical and work on his garden until he has a new CinC next January..

If he has a new CinC in January. Would not put it past the great orange one to use the Covid-19 crisis to forgo the election in November if he can get away with it. Also, the fact that Trump may well win a second term is a possibility.
What are you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem.
