For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

''Decision announced for RNZAF To purchase 5 x C130J-30''

That was on the scrolling banner news items on Euronews, this lunch time... it said:

... New Zealand to buy five Lockheed Martin Super Hercules transport aircraft for $1 billion to replace existing planes after breakdowns...
(not cheap! maybe includes other stuff?)

Where would they be based? Casement is tiny, it needs expansion if based there.

Well, same place we'd put 16 Gripens. My vote is on Knock.

Knock or Shannon are ideally located and already have the runway and plenty of space for associated infrastructure. . Temporary aircraft shelters are available until you build proper HAS.

What about Area 52 in Longford, I understand C130s where "seen operating" from there about 15 years ago
It was the year of fire...the year of destruction...the year we took back what was ours.
It was the year of rebirth...the year of great sadness...the year of pain...and the year of joy.
It was a new age...It was the end of history.
It was the year everything changed.

Again how do you sell moving AC people to the middle of nowhere in Knock, Shannon at least Limerick.

Forget Knock, a transport hub should be centrally located, Athlone would be perfect but as there is no airport there Shannon is the next best. The area around Shannon can be consider a sort of aviation hub already.
No need for HAS, they no longer provide the protection they once did.

Can I have a window seat please?
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
                          Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

So you just need weather protection then. There used to be spare hangarage there in the past. Who is in SAL now? What about the Paint shed next door?
I do understand though that the further you move the air corps folk from Dublin, the closer they are to turning to a pillar of salt. This is unfortunate.

I wonder what the inflight movie is??
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.
