    Or the PLAN Amphib that burned while fitting out. But yeah there does seem to be fire safety issues.

    'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
    'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
    Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
    He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

    The USN have lifted off the standing mast, while they are preparing to remove the fallen one both due to concerns with the structural integrity of the island, and for example of this, here's a tweet with some photos:

    The first one, the guy is looking up through 4 decks through the island...

    Investigators now believe the fire was started deliberately by a USN sailor, making it the largest loss of property due to arson of all time.

    https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zon...suspect-report

    Multiple sources with close ties to Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) told ABC 10News that investigators determined the July 12 fire may have been set intentionally. Investigators identified a sailor as an arson suspect in their probe, sources said.

    Seems that dur to the criminal investigation the USN still does not know if they can save the USS Bonhomme-Richard. Even if they can it might have to re-build everything from the well deck upwards. IMHO if they need hulls they should instead spend the money on the two reserve Tarawa class vessels, modify the deck for the F-35 and plonk a ski-jump on the bow. It would be a lot faster and entail lower risks. A F-35 will fit in a Tarawa class hangar on on the side lift, so mods would be limited to making the deck suitable.

    I don't think they are short of hulls. They already have more flat tops than the rest of the world's navies combined.

    But they still believe they need more, especially as China now has 2 with 2 more building!
    They only have 11x CVN's and 9x LHA/LHD's to counter the Chinese without a replacement.

    Yes and no, unless the pricetag of the new Carriers drops it's unlikely they are going to be able to sustain a 1 for 1 replacement for the Nimitz class, meanwhile China already has overtaken them on total hull numbers, while the USN has wasted billions on the LCS, has got nowhere in replacing the Cruisers and are only starting to look at a new DDG, while funding the SSBN build... The USN is facing a fairly bleak decade tbh.

    It is now 355 by 2034; the 500 ship Navy was a long time ago.

    And that from memory is to include Unmanned hulls, and I guess the proposed new "small" Marine hulls. At the rate they are going I half expect the Cruisers will never be replaced, the new DDG design that they are talking about starting up at about 13K will end up having to replace the Burkes and the Cruisers.
