    I think it is easy to tell those who have never been to Lebanon by their expressions of surprise at anything that happens in Lebanon.

    “It had been there for six years and had never exploded before” will be someone’s answer...
    'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
    'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
    Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
    He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

    Some footage from inside the damaged vessel, clearly showing her proximity to the blast.

    Interesting blog looking at the RN response, sending a Survey ship to Beruit, and it's usefulness.

    The BI is reporting that the initial fire may have been started by our old friend welding!

    Lebanese officials said the explosion on Tuesday evening at a warehouse in the city's port followed a fire accidentally started by welders who were trying to repair a hole in the building.

    Informative article (if a bit gushing at times)

    It took years to get a government in the first place. Unless this is part of a bigger picture that is not yet clear, this is a step backwards, not forwards.

    Lebanon's constitution requires on consociational government. You cannot throw one of them together overnight

    We will have too see how the people react and what happens in the next few days. They have been calling for revolution, they are tired of the current parties and system. If a new set of leader rise out of the demonstrations then we might get real change.

    The National Pact doesn't allow for change though. Marionite President, Suuni Prime Minister and Shi'ite Speaker. They are hamstrung by their sectarianism
