The BI is reporting that the initial fire may have been started by our old friend welding!

Lebanese officials said the explosion on Tuesday evening at a warehouse in the city's port followed a fire accidentally started by welders who were trying to repair a hole in the building.

Informative article (if a bit gushing at times)

It seems like the government in Lebanon has finally got the message, hopefully the start of something good for the country,

It took years to get a government in the first place. Unless this is part of a bigger picture that is not yet clear, this is a step backwards, not forwards.

Lebanon's constitution requires on consociational government. You cannot throw one of them together overnight

We will have too see how the people react and what happens in the next few days. They have been calling for revolution, they are tired of the current parties and system. If a new set of leader rise out of the demonstrations then we might get real change.

The National Pact doesn't allow for change though. Marionite President, Suuni Prime Minister and Shi'ite Speaker. They are hamstrung by their sectarianism

                    That sounds familiar.

Well, according to the experts, it was a bloody big bang (it's always good to have these things confirmed by someone who knows):

The port area of Beirut was destroyed by one of the biggest non-nuclear explosions in history.
