  • Veterans Railcard - UK Rail

A railcard giving 1/3 off train tickets in the UK (subject to conditions) is becoming available for UK Veterans (inc Merchant Marine). It's not free, but could be useful if doing a lot of train travel.

    1/3 off most rail fares!

We are pleased to announce the introduction of a new Railcard just for UK Veterans, which will be on sale from October 2020, with discounted travel valid from early November 2020.

If you have served for at least one day in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces (Regular or Reserve) or Merchant Mariners and seen duty on legally defined military operations, you may be eligible.

The Veterans Railcard will be available at an introductory price of just £21 for one year, if purchased before 31 March 2021. That's a saving of £9 on the normal retail price of £30.

A 3-year Railcard is also available for an introductory price of just £61, if purchased before 31 March 2021, instead of the normal retail price of £70.

Like our other Railcards it will offer savings of 1/3 off most rail travel, whether visiting family and friends or simply enjoying a day out. You can also nominate a companion to get 1/3 off when travelling with you and up to 4 children travelling with you get 60% off.
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
    Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

There were efforts to get something similar for the DF. CIE wanted it to be during commuting times and only while in uniform, then abandoned the project at the end of last year.

I think there was something about needing evidence that it was your home station you were travelling to too. Basically it seemed they had no real interest in meaningful engagement

Such an initiative goes back further
Dublin Bus introduced a similar scheme for Reservists
It bit the dust shortly after I joined in 1989, as far as I can remember

        Criteria were:
        • You had to be serving member of the RDF
        • You had to be in uniform
        • You had to be travelling to/from training

Think it was waddied as it was being abused by certain clowns who messed it up for every one else
Also only was going to benefit those parading in Dublin units
Unsure if a similar scheme was in place for Bus Eireann

The main mover for it was one of the top men in CIE, who also happened to be a serving officer in 21 Inf Bn (FCA) at the time
"Well, stone me! We've had cocaine, bribery and Arsenal scoring two goals at home. But just when you thought there were truly no surprises left in football, Vinnie Jones turns out to be an international player!" (Jimmy Greaves)!"

Sir Tom said it was "wonderful" to be awarded the first railcard giving veterans a travel discount.

Captain Sir Tom Moore has been presented with the first new discount railcard for military veterans.

The card allows some 830,000 veterans not eligible for existing railcards to get a discount off fares.

At his Bedfordshire home, Sir Tom, who served in World War Two, was presented with the card by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.

The veteran raised almost £33m for NHS charities by walking laps of his garden before his 100th birthday in April.

Sir Tom said: "This is a wonderful occasion to accept the first veterans' railcard.

"It is a rare opportunity to show thanks and gratitude to veterans and this railcard is a necessary recognition and investment in veterans," he added.

Mr Shapps said he was "delighted" to present Sir Tom with the scheme's first card.

"Through his service and his inspirational fundraising, he has shown the selflessness and indomitable spirit of all those who have served."

The railcard is part of the government's veterans strategy, which aims to provide them with support in areas such as relationships, employment, health, finance and housing.

Charles Byrne, director general of The Royal British Legion, welcomed the card "at a time when many veterans are facing significant financial hardship".

The annual railcard gives up to a third off fares and would normally cost £30.

He set up The Captain Tom Foundation to help NHS staff, released an autobiography and achieved a number one single with his version of You'll Never Walk Alone, alongside Michael Ball.

Originally from Keighley, West Yorkshire, he was knighted by the Queen in a private ceremony at Windsor Castle in July.
