The vessel was evacuated and five units of the Cork County Fire Service responded - one unit from nearby Cobh and four units from Midleton

If it was adjacent to where “cutting work” was being done, perhaps an inadequate fire watch?

From pics on “Cork Safety Alerts” on Facebook it is a compartment port mid ships. Foam definitely deployed

A spokesperson for the Defence Forces said: “While a full investigation into the cause of the fire will be conducted, it is thought to have started in a stores compartment adjacent to where cutting work was being carried out by engineers.”

“The ships Duty Watch responded to the alarm and carried out first aid firefighting to contain the fire and prevent any spread.

“The scene has now been handed over to Cobh Local Area Fire Brigade,” the spokesperson said.

Routine when burning and welding is a full briefing and "permit to work" granted subject to safety conditions. This includes fire watch with extinguishers and hoses run for possible boundary cooling. If welding near adjacent stores, removal of flammable containers may be required and a watch provided to the inside of the bulkhead or seam being heated by weld. Under few circumstances should a ship be handed over to civilian firefighters due to likely loss of vertical stability leading to possible loll and capsize. Foam is a fire suppressant usually used for oil fires to cut off oxygen. So sorry for everybody, I was on the Cliona.

            Local units respond.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Looks like a large diameter vent pipe they cut to flood an unsighted area. Shore firefighters are keen to put out fires but not too interested in keeping the ship afloat. Fair bit of collateral damage.

Another ship not available for duty for the foreseeable. Although she may have been going in for refit anyway.

That would be the case even if it was a factory for hot works but obviously the location makes it even more important

Saw a pic of a AB holding a hatch but apart from that

Not until P51 is back fully operational.

No report of any injuries thankfully, some treated at scene for minor smoke inhalation.
