  • UK to increase Defence Spending by largest since Cold War.

Reports tonight that Johnson is about to announce a 4 year plan with a 16 billion increase for the UK military centered on increased Cyber/Space areas, though reportedly won't affect the existing hole in the Budget:

So the UK just INCREASED their defence spending by 17 times the annual Irish Defence Budget?
    Is that correct?
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Just like that £350 million a week to the NHS that a certain someone also promised.
It was the year of fire...the year of destruction...the year we took back what was ours.
It was the year of rebirth...the year of great sadness...the year of pain...and the year of joy.
It was a new age...It was the end of history.
It was the year everything changed.

Let's see if this becomes reality, at least with Ben Wallace there is someone at the head of the MoD who knows the military side as he was an Officer in the BA and also worked later for QinetiQ.

The Space Command is more PR than anything but the Cyber efforts are welcomed. What it is unlikely to solve is the funding gap on the equipment side.

Whenever space command is mentioned I am reminded of the Netflix series "Space Force" which managed not to be as funny as the real situation.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

the UK wants its future NATO contribution to be heavily slanted to the maritime domain - which does kind of fit into our geographic location - to a large extent thats also starting from where we are and building on our current strengths: we have a very modern navy thats getting more modern and capable by the year, while the heavy, armoured forces of a BOAR2.0 are at the more mature end of the service lives.

its also much easier to put a naval task group in the western pacific than it is to put an armoured Bde in Taiwan...

given the costs of defence - really expensive stuff manned by really expensive people - the UK is choosing to choose, rather than attempt to field both a NATO/Rest of World Navy and a heavy armoured division and faling at both.

The only way that will happen is if France and Spain start downsizing.
UK Naval fleet: 77 Navy RFA 13
French Navy: 110 Ships and subs
Spanish Navy: 138 Ships & Subs

no, thats numbers, not (admittedly a rabbit warren of subjectivity) a measure of power.

The Times Defence reporter is tweeting that included in the new spending is a "Type 32" frigate? Given Johnson is also committing to the 8 26's and the 5 31's, what role would another Frigate class be?

Never heard of it, but presumably a new class to replace the types not already replaced by Type 31. The Type 26 numbers were reduced, and the T31e won't fill the gap so maybe the balance of replacements will be this as yet unknown type? Or is the PM making a random statement safe in the knowledge he'll be long gone from politics before it fails to materialise?
Some suggestions are T32 will be a T31 Batch 2, or export variant. Not unusual for the RN to give essentially identical ships with minor changes different class names, The 1960s frigate types differed only in weaponry.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.
