  • Military Working Dogs

Maybe it's the animal lover in me, mixed with the obvious military interest, but I've been wondering why don't we have a Military Dog unit in the country?

The UK has the 1st Military Working Dog Regiment, the US have used dogs in SF units, and on mission, the Belgian Malinois breed being used in the Bin Laden raid (https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/ne...laden-mission/).

The 1st Military Working Dog Regiment has a mix of regular and reserve, and a variety of breeds for different taskings like detection, tracking, sentry and attack.

    Just a thought.
What are you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem.

Great asset for actual war fighting militaries. Most definitely a nice to have versus a need to have to the DF.

Sounds like an ideal pet project for some senior officer though. Standby for the "working group" call on Ikon.

I suppose you could construe, assisting the Gardai and customs with the execution of a warrant to search a specific location within a barracks, as "work" alright.

But don't have their own. Nor have I seen pics of the Wing working with dogs, given that other SOF units globally do.

Is this a gap, although a minor one it would seem?

Most definitely the exception rather than the rule.

Searches - Yes (and prior to departure)
                Dogs - Not so much

Not the same thing at all!
An army is power. Its entire purpose is to coerce others. This power can not be used carelessly or recklessly. This power can do great harm. We have seen more suffering than any man should ever see, and if there is going to be an end to it, it must be an end that justifies the cost. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain

A video overview of 1 MWD Sqn, different dog and team profiles.

One thing that does come to mind though, uniform inspection must be a nightmare with all the fur

Avoid fleece type material or wool and you'll be fine.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

                        A man with experience !!

Back on topic, there is obviously roles defence from EOD, Security, S&R, Tracking, etc that could be covered by MWD's.

There are lots of things that seem obvious to us, that all other military arms do as a matter of routine, that the Irish DF do not do. Military dogs (either for security or search) is just one. Don't forget we only have 40mm rifle grenade launchers for just over a decade, when most other armies had them since the 1960s (including our friends up north). SRAAW also saw introduction very recently, when again, single use launchers of this type had been in use since the 60s.We have no tanks. We have no SPGs. We have no missile based artillery. No tracked APCs. etc.
Dogs are great force multipliers. Fear the land shark.

So, sometime between 2040 and 2050 we might see a trial MWD unit! Fantastic!!

Personally I’d be arguing for more land sharks for Gardai and Customs
