Steady on,Fine if you consider the point petty but others may not.

The initial enquiry was made on this post to establish the members last held rank and yes a dedicated thread regarding civvies using mil ranks etc would be better.

At no stage was any post used to have a swipe at Mr R in fact I was very impressed with his skills as incident officer some years ago when I had contact with him concerning a tragedy and he has had a distinguished career as a naval line officer and would have commanded most of the current NS assets save poss the P50s and as a diver would hve the composure to handle T4s and UXBs.

Back to the main point, the military do not have sole preserve on unifoms etc civvies can wear what they like so long as they do not contravene certain laws and \or use uniforms to commit offences. If hotel porters want to look like generalissimos etc fine let them live in their own world.

Replys on the basis of "so what everybody does it" do not answer the matter. The main point arises where the officeholder deals with the heads of the mil on a one to one basis or sits with the heads on statutory committees etc. I might suggest the tiltle\rank on the civvy uniform gives the officeholder a parity of esteem or signifies the amount of personnel commanded by the officeholder and perhaps some of the more seasoned posters may be able to explore\clarify this.

Speaking t/c maybe not so sure on the dail ushers afterall they run the dail and poss have more savvy than the Tds.With all the civvy uniform examples posted I wont be surprised if I see Dublin Bus manager decked out like director of Cav.:(tongue in cheek)

Ok I'll go with that.. just wanted some clarification there.

The Coastguard is a civilian organisation that has nothing to do with the DoD so wheres the problem with it having its own management structure with corresponding uniforms and indicators of post.?

Should a garda sergeant be admonished for wearing rank markings that have the origin in the Army as opposed to a police force..?

A member of the coast guard would hold some of the same status as a member of the Gardai, the garda is not military personel but yet gardai wear medals they earned as members of the DF, why should a member of the coast guard not do the same?

senior management in the Garda wear 'Sam Browne' belts, but nobody questions their right to do so as it is part of the uniform for their post, the Director of the Coast guard wears the uniform of his job,his medals are his own, the rank indicator is that which the civil service decided the indicator to be for the uniform...where is the problem?

I'm sure the uniform wearing legislation was examining prior to introduction,

Shall we discuss the uniforms of the Custom service while on the subject as it is also similar to both Naval and AC uniforms..and even looks a bit like the CG one with its own rank markings.

To be honest G.R the WO/Sea. has not been the main man sincr the Service re-organised 10 years ago. he had exactly the same function as all of the other WOs and that was as Branch NCO. For ceremonial occasions both Support Command and the College used their own S/NCOs.The Comms Branch has been without a WO since last Autumn
