  • Bought a cheapie 'Maglite' copy in Lidl bout 5 years ago, still going strong. Think it cost around £5.00stg, you don't always have to fork out big money for big name products to get quality.

Well actually the "Guys Overseas" are issued with the stuff, and this means if you are talking about chest pouches. It has been on issue since almost the start of Liberia, and is now issued to those deploying there. But I digress, the point to note here is that most officers(PDF) don't make an issue of people who wear non issue kit anymore. It shouldent matter where your kit comes from (unless its the enemys!) anymore, as long as the basic pattern is made up of issue kit , it shouldent be e problem if you want to supplement it with your own additions. Ive been doing this for years, and I have yet to meet an nco or officer who has made a big deal out of it. If they do, it is more than likely that he (or she these days god help us) will not regularly need to wear this kind of kit. And we all know what type of soldier that is. So thats my tuppence worth. So there. Hmmmph.

        • Its not the PDF who can be the problem ...they are very open minded to kit and often query different bits and pieces we get oursevlves.
..The problem pertains to people who don't have enough balls to get up and sort out their own personnal needs and then bitch that the minister won'tsupply the kit they need...why should he as most of these type people turn up for two parades a year and run miles at the mention of a tactical exercise.
          ..If you need buy it
Its far better to turn atleast looking like you know what youare supposed to be doing rather than turning up with two shopping bags and nothing else

          • Hate to be the one to burst your bubble lads but their is still a healthy "what are you wearing that for its not issue" or "your all army ,who do you think you are a ranger?" attitude in the pdf with regard to wearing non plce webbing, although it is starting to change with the use of tacvests and chest webbing overseas.i guess alot of it is down to when you use it.Wearing a non issue item ging on a cit escort woukld be putting yourself under a big spotlight and you would be told to lose it sharpish.Whearas if you are an instructor on a course who is gonna question you?
I have all ways believed that aslong as something makes tactical sense,is in keeping with the rest of the uniform ,and makes a soldier comfortable on the ground then they should be left alone.having said that somekind of uniformity should still apply.

                • Sleeping Bag

I'm looking for advice on buying a good quality cold weather sleeping bag. I have a British Army issue cold weather sleeping bag but its a c**t to carry in the middle of winter when you have to carry alot of warm clothes, extra food etc...

I've been looking at the Snugpak special forces range and they seem impressive. Anyone know where they can be bought in Ireland?

What sleeping bags do you use in the winter? Don't say the 58 please cos they're not warm enough for winter in my experience. I'm looking for something lightweight that will keep me warm during the coldest mountain weather Ireland can throw at me.

                  • The warmer the bag is, the heavier it's going to be. You could try using a liner with a lighter bag.

                        • Reading through the posts those Dryflo T-Shirts sound the business. Saw bulldemboots with one and they look the business too. Had a look at lowe alpine website the green they are offering isn't exactly the Irish bottle green but will anyone notice and will you actually care when your nice and dry on a pissy day.
Other kit, I find the issue socks brilliant and always try to get more, ive bought lots of different types of hiking socks but they don't do the same job.
Also Military tracpac medical kit is good, it comes with the basics plasters, bandages, sisscors and the like but you have lots of space to add to it and best bit is it will fit nicely in a smock pocket, very handy because you will always have it on you.
As a cheap alternative to the gucci boots try the german para boots very comfy and waterproof, cost me E45 compared to E100+ for meindels. They have lasted a few hard ass days including parachuting X5 and paintballing X2.(Thanks to Rhino for putting me onto them)
Set of dog tags/braclet anything with my blood type on them. Essential and I mean ESSENTIAL for anyone with a rare blood type, 2% of the population have mine so i'm f****d in an accident.
There are probably a few bits and bobs i'm forgetting but thats it really.
I don't see the point of getting anything unless I have a need for it, wetgear is my biggest whinge at the moment. I don't really care what type it is so long as it keeps me dry, just a tiny bit sick of getting soaked. I know we will never get the goretex dpm stuff but what happened to the old OD green stuff?????
Lifes a bitch, so be her pimp!

Ski socks are the best you can get IMO. They are designed to reduce blisters by the way they are made. All the threads going in one direction or something like that? They are warm too.

How do Ski Socks help prevent Blistering?
Ski socks that are made of layers of lightweight, moisture wicking materials will help prevent blistering. They help prevent blistering by absorbing the friction between the layers. Feet stay dry as the inner layer wicks the moisture away from the foot and into the outer layer for evaporation.
