Are there no specialized units such as the ARW or recce platoons/companies who are issued better stuff?
I've contacted today Mr. Brig. Gen. Paul Pakenham, he's member of the High Level Planning and Procurement Group and again a really helpful Seargent at the Ordnance's office
regarding future acquisitions of kit since I haven't found any evidence or reliable figures within the strategy statement of 2015.
ARW have plate carriers and the like but they're outside the green army procurement system, Snipers & arty spotters etc get nicer clothing. Recce &/ ISTAR bods were meant to get the sniper kit issue but I dont think it happened. Some other specialist units have their own equipment budgets so there's more leeway. I doubt personal kit would be in any "high level planning" document!

Indeed, he retired. Forgot to mention that.
Nevertheless, he's a member of the HLPPG.

      @ The real Jack:

Thanks for the heads-up. Thought that the HLPPG would mean they're responsible for all major decisions regarding kit and equipment.
I'll try to ask my contacts in detail about the special budgets and possible decisions.

In most of our German units it's probably the same as in Ireland. Every platoon has it's gear in the basement, stored for specific scenarios.
Other units such as SOF units or for example german para rescue jumpers have different kit or even a budget from which every soldier can
      individually order/buy kit.

      • If it's not confidential: Who's currently the manufacturer/supplier of the IPLCS/body armour? Afaik not ProTac, maybe LOWE? I'd like to contact the company to ask them for some information.

                That's a real shame... It's absolutely crud.

It's gotten to the stage where lads with certain roles in the big Units are starting to buy their own daysacks and even chest rigs because the issued stuff just isn't upto the task.

I won't even get started on the clothing side of the house, wetgear that barely qualifies as water resistant, nevermind water proof, says it all.

it may not be much consolation, but now we've finally been issued gear thats worth more than a bonfire, at least buying what you need is both easier and cheaper than it would have been in 1970's/80's/90's...

i've mentioned it before, but when i went to Bosnia in the early 1990's, my TA unit spent about a thousand pounds on gear that my QM and OC could send me in with a clear concience... having faced this same 'you want me to wear what...?' issue, you have my sympathy.

                  • Regarding the German army, not everything's so fabolous as people outside Germany might think.

For example, this is the load carrying equipment we get issued in basic and special basic training.

Even thou we have special gear for special guys, still 185.000 of these have been bought last year...

I've been in contact with DeV about a survey I set up for my business plan with question concerning kit and what you as members of the PDF/RDF would buy etc.
He gave me an okay to move on, unfortunately I can't open a new thread for this, so I post this here. If an admin/mod see's this, it would be awesome if you
could start a new thread with an appealing heading so that as many people as possible answer the survey. Please feel free to forward it to your comrades outside of this forum.
The survey is totally anonymous, even IP's won't be collected etc

                    Thanks in advance!

The Revolutionary Fibers and Textiles Manufacturing Innovation Institute will be based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and bring together a consortium of 89 universities, manufacturers and non-profits, the Pentagon said in a news release.
