  • PC-12 is out around the Dublin south centaral area as I type (22.10) doing low and fast sweeps below the cloud base lit up like a Christmas tree.

Without two engines, its use as in Maritime ISTAR (bearing in mind, Ireland is an Island) is limited to the shoreline.
Gardai have their own aircraft for this. They may also be getting a PC12NG, but not Spectre. Different mission.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Not dissimilar missions, but AGS were looking at a larger aircraft

See 10.7 of the RFP for what became the PC12 Spectre

Very different of course, from the Garda RFI of course (issued before the AC RFP)

        • Will the PC12M ever be deployed on overseas missions in an ISR role?
Will the PC12M be able/allowed fly over water for Maritime ISR tasks?
If the PC12M is flying ISR missions over Ireland, then the vast majority of time it will be in support of ATCP.

Reading the DF one, there is mention of an option for a fourth aircraft, which will be delivered without sensor suite, for use by AGS. Is this 280?

            • So we get two PC-12 Spectre with full mission system, one PC-12 Spectre fitted for but not with a mission system and one PC-12NG utility.

The ISTAR suite is removable. The sensors aren’t (I assume) but the “ball” with the optics retracts into the fuselage.

Given the price it could be 3 Spectres with 3 removable ISTAR suites plus the (now assumingly) exercised option on the NG ? Or this could be in addition to the option? Or maybe the option didn’t make it into the contract?

                  • Well it would explain why we got a bare aircraft, with zero fuss. It's not normal for the DoD to do such a thing.

                      • Or maybe Pilatus did a deal to avoid penalties for late delivery?
It was the year of fire...the year of destruction...the year we took back what was ours.
It was the year of rebirth...the year of great sadness...the year of pain...and the year of joy.
It was a new age...It was the end of history.
It was the year everything changed.

                        • So do the Aer Corp end up with 3 PC-12m with all the snakey stuff plus one basic PC-12,
and the Garda get a new aircraft for themselfs??

Why would they send all three over to America if one is not being fitted out with the equipment ?

Because it has to be fitted for the equipment.

Nothing about this purchase, from the colour scheme to the apparent fit-out appears planned. A need existed and a cancelled order just happened to be available off the production line.

Maybe it was bought at the optioned price and will be modded/painted later but there is little doubt that there is a massive mixture of luck and opportunism in this latest addition.

Regarding the Spectre outfit and possibly sharing 2 suites between 3 aircraft. You'd have to wonder as to how wise that concept is given the fragility/sensitivity of said equipment and potential cost in the event someone drops sonething. Especially given the availability of a dedicated utility machine now. I sincerely hope that is/was not the plan.
