Which begs the question....while volunteerism is a great asset it doesn't always guarantee continuous availability of staff.....which is an absolute necessity to give the service any chance of public or professional credability.
An army is power. Its entire purpose is to coerce others. This power can not be used carelessly or recklessly. This power can do great harm. We have seen more suffering than any man should ever see, and if there is going to be an end to it, it must be an end that justifies the cost.Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain
I understand it is to be based out of an airstrip in Rathcoole, near Kanturk in North Cork. They couldn't secure a permanent spot in either Cork or Kerry airport.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.
Geographically a better location than either airports but without an instrument approach it will be more weather limited requiring Visual Flight Rules for operations.
Long history of helicopter operations from that site.
fair play to john karney, ex ns diver, this has been his vision for the last 20 years and its finally come to fruition through hard work and banging on countless doors and never giving up. hats off.
I know someone who will be very interested in that...
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,

NIAA have a second stand-by aircraft based at Enniskillen Airport (I'm guessing they rotate airframes between the operational one and the stand-by one).
I wondered at the time why they didn't just bring that one on-line...turns out the service only has two full-time pilots...and the Chief Pilot is ex-Irish Air Corps.
While there is no scheduled traffic the airport remains fully functional and provides 24hrs cover for the Coast Guard Air Assets based on site. Probably the only reason the location continues to function at all apart from some air taxi traffic.
.
And yet getting €5m of our taxpayers money for a runway extension
